Intro
When I was brought on to redesign the Diamond League website, it was clear the stakes were high. The Diamond League isn’t just any athletics competition—it’s a global stage where the world’s fastest, strongest, and most inspiring athletes compete for glory and nearly $10 million in prize money each year. Yet, the website felt like it was stuck in the early 2000s: clunky navigation, outdated visuals, and a fragmented experience that didn’t match the league’s prestige. My mission? Transform it into a modern, cohesive platform that fans, sponsors, and media could navigate effortlessly—all in just two months.
The Diamond League is a powerhouse in athletics, hosting 15 meets across 13 countries, showcasing 32 disciplines with equal opportunities for men and women, and featuring stars like Olympic champions and world record holders. With such a high-profile reputation, the website needed to reflect that same world-class energy.

The Challenge
The client’s brief was clear: unify a fragmented website into a single, responsive platform. The old site had sub-sites for city events on separate servers, with inconsistent layouts, poor navigation, and outdated visuals. They provided a brand book with bold colors and typography, low-fidelity wireframes for key pages, and technical docs outlining pages like the homepage, event hubs, athlete profiles, and ticketing. The goal was a cohesive experience that felt as dynamic as the league itself.
My Plan & Starting Point
Before diving into design, I took a deep dive into the existing website to understand its shortcomings. The client’s technical documentation was a goldmine: it detailed every required page, from event schedules to sponsor showcases, and highlighted pain points like confusing navigation and inconsistent branding across sub-sites. I studied the low-fidelity wireframes, which gave a rough sense of the desired layout for the homepage and event pages, and leaned heavily on the brand book’s guidelines — vibrant colors, bold typography, and a focus on high-energy visuals.
Looking at the old site, it was clear why it wasn’t working. The homepage felt like a cluttered bulletin board, event pages had mismatched styles, and mobile users were left scrolling endlessly. To get a sense of the full scope, I explored archived versions of the site, which revealed just how fragmented the experience was. Curious to see it for yourself?

It's clear that white space can be utilized more effectively and the application of the accent color is indeed excessive

Check out this awesome table featuring our champions where all the info is neatly organized! I absolutely love tables — they're a huge part of my design style! But this time, I'm excited to shake things up a bit and add some fun, stepping away from the usual table format!

The Diamond League had a ton of info laid out in tables but the different designs on each page made it feel like they were from totally different websites.

Is there a cool way to show off the calendar of events Definitely! Let’s make it awesome!

Process
With a clear plan in hand, I fired up Figma and got to work. My goal was to create a design system that was both beautiful and functional, aligning with modern UI/UX trends while staying true to the Diamond League’s bold brand identity. I started by building a component library – buttons, cards, navigation bars, and typography styles – that could scale across dozens of pages. This ensured every element, from hero banners to footers, felt cohesive.
I designed both desktop and mobile versions simultaneously, knowing that fans often check results or buy tickets on the go. The homepage became a vibrant hub with bold imagery and clear calls-to-action, while event pages used responsive grids to showcase schedules and highlights. Athlete profiles were given a sleek, card-based layout, and the ticketing system was streamlined for quick purchases. In total, I crafted over 30 unique pages, each tested for clarity and ease of use.
Collaboration was key. I iterated quickly, refining layouts based on client feedback and usability tests. Every design decision, from color contrast to button placement, was made to balance aesthetics with functionality. Once the designs were polished, I handed off a comprehensive Figma file to the development team, complete with annotations and a style guide to ensure pixel-perfect implementation. The result? A website that felt as fast and dynamic as the athletes it featured.

The redesigned version features improved space utilization, updated blog news, and more subtle accent colors, giving it modern and stylish appearance.

To replace a static, boring table, I created a dynamic champion gallery. The new design uses a card format that is visually appealing and ready to grow with more information. By clicking on a card, users can dive deeper into an athlete’s profile to explore a wealth of information about their career and accomplishments.

My goal wasn't to eliminate tables, but to use them more effectively. I reserved tables for data that truly benefits from that format, ensuring information is always clear, organized, and easy to scan.

The final touch was the event calendar, which I transformed from a boring table into a visually rich and intuitive timeline. Now, each event is not only accompanied by a date and a color-coded indicator, but also a beautiful picture of the host city, adding emotion and engagement.
Mobile
Beyond the desktop, a major focus was ensuring the new platform delivered a seamless experience on any device. I designed a fully responsive mobile version that maintains the visual integrity and performance of the desktop site, allowing fans, sponsors, and media to access critical information effortlessly, no matter where they are.

Afterword
This redesign was a sprint, but crossing the finish line felt incredible. The client was thrilled with the unified, modern platform, and early feedback from fans showed they loved the seamless experience. Thanks for reading through my process—I hope it gave you a glimpse into the work that went into bringing the Diamond League’s digital presence up to speed.
